Component 1: Research

In the research portion of this senior project we had to do various activities to try and prove that our problem was actually a problem in our community and/or around the world.

Activity A1.2:  Choosing a Topic

In this activity we had to pick a problem that we wanted to solve for the remainder of the school year. This was the first thing my partner Zach Shellhorn & I did before moving on to any other activities.

Writing A Problem Statement

Once we decided that we wanted to solve the problem of working efficiently on the go. Zach & I then did some statistical research to make our problem statement more convincing. We then presented our initial problem statement to the class for some feedback on what they found confusing.

Patent Research

In this portion of the research section, Zach & I were required to find a minimum of 6 patents that were most closely related to solving our problem. This is only an initial search and will probably go back to patent research once we come up with a solution.

Artifact Research

In this portion of the project we had to find 10 different forms of documentation to prove that working on the go was a problem.

Zach's and my artifacts consisted of a website, patent, blog, mentor email, newspaper article, magazine, book, TedTalk, Keynote speech, and non-profit organization.

Market Research

During Market Research we had to compare products that attempt to solve working efficiently on the go. We did this by making a brochure explaining our problem, we made a survey to get our communities feedback/input, comparative analysis worksheet, and a business plan.

Decision Matrix

During this portion of the Research phase we were required to create a solution matrix. Our solution matrix isn't for our solutions but rather for the solutions that companies have attempted.

Design Specifications

During this portion of the project, Zach and I had to come up with constraints and wants for our design. We used information from our surveys along with our research/personal preference. We had to identify aspects of concern that may affect the consumer, the enviornment, production, etc.

Written Project Proposal

The written project proposal was a written form of our presentation, which is to be used to prove that we had a problem and why. Zach and I had to prove why we belived this was an actual problem through a "formal document."

Concept Test Survey

This survey was intend to be more specific and have a more focused target audience. This survey was also intended to get more specific survey results from the broad survey/market research we released about a month prior.
